In the wake of Arizona’s SB1062, Taylor and Gunner have decided it’s time to dig in and start participating. For the record, we’re just stealing the name of military operations in Iraq. You can check out the real Thunder Runs at Defense.org. We’re gonna go with it until we’re told we can’t.
In any event, two relatively nondescript white guys want to see how the system works and see if they can figure out how to close the door that lets the crazy people into the legislature. At least in Arizona.
At it’s core, the idea is to de-throne a politician. This doesn’t mean a malicious smear campaign to have their kingdom over throw them or see that they’re beheaded in town square. We don’t even want to defame them as human beings, because the fact of the matter is that they’re entitled to their opinions and religious beliefs. But to make those beliefs policy? To dilute constitutional (maybe even, dare I say, God given) rights by enacting laws that make it OK to discriminate? No, sir. The journey that we are about to embark on is to socialize the simple truth that these politicians work for us and if enough of us agree that we need new representation, then how difficult is that goal to attain on the state level.
By allowing a bill like 1062 to even get to the Governor’s desk, it indicates one of two things: They weren’t paying attention, or – worse – they actually think it’s OK to discriminate. But their presence also illustrates a simple truth: we, too, fell asleep at the wheel. The numbers below will show that the key players in this bill were able to bring this to the table because we gave them an open invitation to do so. So at the end of it, it’s OK to be upset. But to be upset and not participate… well, that means you have to be upset quietly. And since we seem to make a lot of noise, we should probably do something about this one.
So as we make our stand and wander into the dark nether regions of Arizona politics, political campaign law, and full fledged shenanigans, we invite anyone willing to play to come play with us. We don’t know what we’re doing and there’s a good chance that we don’t achieve our goal. But if nothing else…well, ya know what? Teddy says it best…
“Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.” — Teddy Roosevelt
